THE PROJECT

This project aims to increase the income of the members of Cootraser, a recyclable solid waste cooperative located in Mutirão, at km 48 of Seropédica. Currently, there are 11 members who collect an extremely low monthly amount, which little guarantees their livelihood and that of the family. There is a difficulty in collecting this recyclable material, taking into account that the cost must be shared by all members and also due to the increase in the unemployment rate, causing an increase in waste pickers on the streets. Among the materials collected by them are: cardboard, glass, plastic, copper, used oil, paper and aluminum can. Today, these people aspire for partnerships and assistance to collect a greater number of waste and, thus, contribute to the sustenance and well-being of these workers.

We are a family owned and operated business.

The project's stimulus is to restructure Cootraser so that the 11 (eleven) beneficiaries of the project have a more dignified life and work. And our macro objective is that the cooperative members achieve financial independence, consistency in the values of their income and that there is an increase in the environmental awareness of the population of Seropédica.

We are a family owned and operated business.

THE COLLECTIVE

Cootraser is a cooperative of recyclable solid waste from Seropédica. Its members previously worked in the Seropédica landfill, and after its closure, the company Ciclus - (Company name: Ciclus Ambiental do Brasil SA), which is a concession of Comlurb (Municipal Cleaning Company) - ceded the land and all machinery for the foundation of Cootraser. For this reason, since its opening, the cooperative members present the necessary equipment for pressing and weighing the materials, as well as a car that assists them in carrying out transportation services for a more optimized collection and separation of waste.

We are a family owned and operated business.

Since the beginning of the project, Cootraser members had great difficulty in increasing the collection of recyclable materials. As already mentioned, in a cooperative, both costs and profits must be shared equally among all members and, therefore, the low collection of materials directly interferes in the wages of these workers. In addition, the increase in the unemployment rate has increased the number of waste pickers on the streets who often collect materials before cooperative members.
